Research Fellow in the Cairns Institute with research interests in short story, writing, culture in the tropics and twentieth-century avant-gardes; founding editor of etropic; convener of the Tropics of the Imagination Conference; patron and life-long member of Tropical Writers Inc.; judge of the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies Colin Roderick Award.

Prior to his retirement in 2021, Stephen Torre BA PhD Qld wasAdjunct Professor of English at James Cook University and a Research Fellow of the Cairns Institute. His research interests are short story writing and culture in the Tropics, and twentieth-century avant-gardes. Stephen now serves as a member of the management committee of the Queensland Writers Centre, Brisbane.

Stephen has taught courses in Australian literature and culture, Avant-Garde/Modernist literature and Short Story Writing. He is one of the judges of the Foundation for Australia Literary Studies annual Colin Roderick Award for the best book published in Australia dealing with Australian life. He is also editor of etropic: electronic journal of studies in the tropics, the project leader of the Cairns Institute’s Cultural Atlas of Tropical Australia and the convenor of the Tropics of the Imagination Conference.
